The Ally Network

The Ally Network provides an avenue through which straight-identified allies and LGBT people can actively express their affirmation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Ally Network members are identified by displaying the Ally symbol (sign, button, magnet) and thus signify that their space is safe to talk about LGBT issues and that students and employees can be "out" or reveal their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Ally Program participants commit to the following:

  • One 2 1/2 hour Ally training session focused on providing an avenue through which all people can actively show their support of LGBT individuals. The training will have four main objectives:
    • Knowing more about the LGBT Community
    • Recognizing what holds us back as individuals and as a society from being supportive and affirming.
    • Speaking up in our everyday interactions to combat homophobia and heterosexism.
    • Acting to make the lives of LGBT individuals better by working for change and continuing to engage in the community.
  • A commitment from a member to attend one LGBT related campus program per year.  Engagement in the community as a vital part of becoming an Ally. Ally network participants should commit to continuing their education as well as staying informed as issues within the LGBT community evolve and change. They could also stay connected to current happenings in the Duke LGBT community and be a visible presence of support for LGBT students, faculty, and staff. The Center for LGBT Life will host events and programs specifically geared toward Ally education.
  • Participation in the Ally Listserv, where current educational articles relating to the LGBT community will be distributed, as well as information on events and programs that would be particularly helpful to allies. Participants would also be able to post questions and information as they see fit. We will also periodically post questions for group dialogue.
