The LGBT Discussion Group
The LGBT discussion group is for people who are questioning their identity, dealing with family, looking for support while coming out, seeking deeper level conversations with others, having cultural or religious conflicts, etc.
We will meet on East Campus in Room 315, Crowell Building from 6:00 until 7:00 pm.
Spring 2009 Dates are as follows:
-January 13th
-January 27th
-February 10th
-February 24th
-March 17th
-March 31st
-April 14th
This group is for individuals all along the continuum from "wondering" to "out, loud, and proud." This is a safe, confidential place to:
- Talk about what's on your mind
- Meet others who are dealing with coming out
- Think about where you are out, and where you are not
- Examine the costs and benefits of being in the closet and being out
- Share your experiences with others
- Get support and advice
- Give support and advice
Maybe you are wondering about your sexual orientation and would like to talk with others who have had or are having similar experiences. Perhaps you are out to friends at school, but not to your family, or at work. Coming out can be challenging and is an ongoing process--we are continually faced with new situations in which we must decide whether or not to disclose our sexual orientation. Those who have journeyed down the path can be helpful to and supportive of those getting started.
Participants in the group agree to respect the confidentiality of other group members. Issues discussed in the group will not be discussed outside of the group with other people!
Note: While almost all of our events are open to friends, guests, and allies, this event is specifically for Duke students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning their identity.
If you have further questions, or would rather meet indvidually to discuss some of the issues listed above please contact the staff.
